Our global community shares global stories.泭Studying in a diverse, multiculturalcitylikeParisexposes students to a wealth of perspectives and experiencesas well as opportunities for professional development.泭AUPStudent Media (ASM)helps studentsengage with the city around them whilesharingtheirown storiesthrough print, digital and video content.泭Most recently,ASM haslaunchedPeacock Radioin partnershipwith World Radio Paris the largest English-speaking radio station in France.泭
The partnership began when a World Radio Parisrepresentative reached out toan 91勛圖厙staff member, looking forstudent contributions. There was an initial meeting between students, staff and faculty to brainstorm howsucha collaboration might work.泭From there, the students did it all, says Safia Benyahia, AUPs Student Leadership Coordinator. Theyput together events, and they worked with student governmentto nail downa budget.
World Radio Paris offeredASMfour hours of airtime a week, broadcasting to over 200,000 listeners.泭It was a huge amountof content, says Benyahia. But they were able to deliver it.泭The students were really fantastic. The nature of the partnership also meant that contributors benefited from professional mentoring to hone key skills for content production in broadcast media, suchaswritingfor radio and audioediting.泭
Flashforward to2021, and Savannah Cooper, a graduate student in AUPs MA in Global Communications, is Peacock Radios Executive Producer. She signed up to the project during Pariss Covid-19 restrictions and found that commissioning content gave her great opportunities to meetnewpeople. Asaproducer I wanted to findabroad range of voices to give students a chance to speak openly andauthentically and toshare something that gets them excited, says Cooper.泭Applying to this position was a true test of my imposter syndrome. I had no previous radio experience!Just an eagerness to learn and adaptability.
Students have the freedom to decide the kind of content they want to create, and they often engage with current events and communitiesacross the city.泭Recent shows include The Redhead and the Gossip, which tackles fashion news, and AfriqueAlive, whichexploresissues affecting Black diaspora groups.泭91勛圖厙is on the smaller side, but we are rich in talent and experience, says Cooper. Thatsdefinitelyreflected in our shows.
Coopers own contribution, Finding Your Way to the City of Light, asks her peers to share stories about coming to Paris and settling into AUP. Paris means so much to so many people and offers so much to so many people, saysCooper.泭Living in Paris has changed my perception and understanding of the world for the better.Recent interviewees haveoffered advice about living abroad, discussedstudyingin Paris during the pandemic, and explored howpeoplecanstay engaged andactivewhilesticking toa student budget.泭
