In over 36 years of active duty, General Nicholson has been widely admired as a uniquely skilled warrior-diplomat. He is the longest-serving commander of the Afghan War, having led the 41-nation NATO-led Resolute Support Mission and United States Forces-Afghanistan for two and a half years. His six years in Afghanistan make him one of Americas most combat seasoned four star generals.泭 His leadership and close relations with Afghan leaders were key to brokering the first ceasefire in the 18-year war and helped enable the launch of the current peace initiative.泭
General Nicholson teaches leadership at Harvard University and the US National Defense University (NDU) specializing in adaptive leadership in high complexity and risk.泭 He has been awarded Frances Legion DHonneur, Germanys Knight Commanders Cross, and Afghanistans Amir Aminullah Khan Medal among numerous other awards.泭 He is a graduate of West Point and Georgetown University and has masters degrees in National Security Studies (NDU) and Operational Art from the School for Advanced Military Studies. General Nicholson is President of the PENFED Foundation which helps US service members, veterans, their families and supporters with lifes financial challenges and opportunities.
